While sometimes you do need a professional to take care of issues, often, these can be resolved with simple troubleshooting.
The same thing happens with your air conditioning system. While it is understandable to want to make sure it’s always in working order, make sure to try these simple fixes before investing time and money on having someone come over.
How To Troubleshoot Your Air Conditioner?
We’ll begin by stating the obvious: Turn off your power supply before getting started. It’s little things like these that make all the difference between ending up with a fixed AC unit, or ending up in the hospital.
With that said, below are some common AC issues and how to fix them.
- The AC Isn’t Cooling: This is one of the worst things that could happen from the list of first world problems. This is especially awful when you’re sweating buckets because it’s the middle of the summer.
Thankfully, the issue may have a simple solution: Change the air filters! When they become full of dust, the dirt blocks the air flow.
- The AC Coils Are Frozen: Ordinarily, when your AC unit absorbs the heat in your home, vapor from the heat condenses. These droplets of water drip into a pan and are drained outside through the system’s drain pipes.
If you haven’t cleaned the coils in a while, these droplets will freeze into frost. As time goes by, they’ll become a layer of ice. Just as with dirty air filters, this will block the air flow and the air in your home will remain warm. So clean the dirty condenser coils and give the system time to thaw out.
- The AC Is Leaking: If the drip pan is rusted or if the drain pipes are blocked (due to dust, dirt, insects, algae, mildew, etc.), your AC will start leaking. If you like handy work, you could change the drain pan yourself or blow out the drain lines.
- The AC Won’t Turn On: Check your breakers to see if one of them turned off.
